Treating Ear Injuries In Dogs

The dog's ear is one of the most common places injuries can occur. Of course this looks quite disgusting on our dogs as often times if no intervention is made, the area of the wound would get wider and worse. Houseflies begin to perch around your dogs ears and he begins to scratch the ear often, which is even going to make it worse.

Causes Of Ear Injuries
Like human, dog's ears get itchy. I mean the inner part of the ears. When you can easily get a cotton swab to clean yours, they can't. Instead they shake their head and sometimes itch the ears with their nails. Even if your dog has his nails cut,  he can still injure  his ears with them.

Skin irritation, Fleas, Ticks, Dandruff, Insect sting and many others are also possible causes of an itchy dog which can lead to ear injuries.

Also some dogs get ear injury through play. Puppies  love to bite and sometimes  they injure one another with their very sharp teeth. These injuries could fall to the ears.

The House-Fly Factor
These set of arrogant pests makes it even worse. If you thought  a goat is stubborn, try a house-fly on a wounded ears. They gather around the affected area, preventing it from healing by constantly feeding on the blood from the  ears. While  trying to shoo them off, the  dog hits the affected area with his fingers...what a mess! The housefly is one animal that complicates the dog's ear injury.

What To Do:
  • Using coconut oil on  injuries has worked for me over the years. It helps reduce fly infestation, and also serves as an antibiotic for the open wound. Other wound healing products can be found at your local vet shop.
  • Ensure your dog is in a clean environment always.
  •  Use a cone collar if your dog wont stop itching.

As always, if the injury remains after your efforts, Consult Your Vet. Don't wait till it gets worse.
